Window films are increasingly popular in homes, offices, clinics, and workspaces for various reasons, such as security, privacy, decoration, or energy savings. Depending on the type you choose – security film, decorative film, metallic/privacy film, or exterior film – the care and maintenance might vary. Here’s a detailed guide by the Tap And Tint team to help you keep your architectural window film looking its best.

Exterior Film

Exterior films are exposed to weather conditions, so they need special care:

  1. Weather Considerations: Clean more frequently if exposed to harsh weather.

  2. Use Gentle Products: Mild detergent with water works best.

  3. Professional Maintenance: Exterior Window Films are typically cleaned by a professional window cleaning company. Please do not use bristle brushes or aggressive cloths, as these cleaning tools will damage the film and possibly void your warranty (if applicable). We recommend using a soft microfiber cloth with a mild detergentand water solution mixture. To help prevent water spotting, you may use a squeegee to remove the water.

Interior Film

While your newly installed window film by Tap And Tint is typically maintenance free, you can follow the below guidelines to keep your film looking new for years to come. For interior films we recommend a silicone polish to keep a fresh polished clean surface. Suggested products include Invisible Glass (tint safe version). Here’s how to care for them:

  1. Wait Before Cleaning: Allow at least 30 days for the film to cure.

  2. Avoid Ammonia-Based Cleaners: Due to the less porous nature of window film, the surface will attract less dirt and will be simpler to clean. We recommend using XPEL Glass Cleaner, Invisible Glass or a mild dishwashing detergent and water mixture in a spray bottle. Please refrain from using ammonia-based or harsh cleaning products. Please only use soft microfiber cloths or paper towels to clean the window film.

  3. Haziness: After installation, if there is a hazy or foggy look to the film, this is due to the mounting solution moisture under the film. This is normal and should dissipate naturally over the course of a few days  or weeks, depending on your climate conditions. Please contact XPEL if you have any concerns.

  4.  Adhesive Tape: If you need to remove adhesive tape from the window film surface, peel the tape as if it were adhered to the glass surface. If you have adhesive left behind, you can remove with a soft microfiber cloth and Invisible Glass (glass cleaner, ammonia-free).

  • Avoid Sharp Objects: Prevent scratches or tears by keeping sharp items away.

  • Mind the Edges: Be gentle around the edges to avoid lifting or peeling.
